Tractor: Tractor: Specialization - HARVESTING IMPLEMENTS

Tractor HARVESTING IMPLEMENTS The various tasks associated with harvesting are dealt with by a vast range of towed implements. These include straw choppers that pick up and chop the debris from wheat harvesting and distribute it so that it can be ploughed in.

For applications where combine harvesters are not used, towed implements are designed to carry out the same functions. These include rotary and disc mowers, rotary tedders and rakes which allow cut green crops to be aerated and dried. Towed balers are variously designed to make circular bales of everything from dry straw to damp silage. Round balers have now largely superseded the square balers, but both work on similar principles, requiring drive from the tractor's power take-off to gather up the cut crop and compress it into manageable bales to be transported from the field. Baler manufacturers include Bamford, Claas, John Deere, Vicon and Welger. Once a crop has been harvested the land needs to be prepared for the next crop and many of the various machines used in preparing the land are of the pull-type - implements towed behind tractors. The process has to contend with widely varying ground conditions in different parts of the world. In many places with temperate climates, excessively wet soil is a problem. Not only can it be difficult for tractors to work without becoming bogged down, but excessive water impedes plant growth because no air can reach the roots in waterlogged soil. To contend with this, machines have been developed that can lay lengths of "land drain", perforated plastic piping, beneath the soil to drain the fields. A more basic method of draining fields is the excavation of ditches. Ploughs are used to turn over the soil after harvest and tlie ploughed fields are then disced and harrowed to allow the seeds of next year's crop to be sown. The basic principle of the plough has remained almost unchanged since a single-furrow plough was towed behind horses or oxen. It still cuts the top layer of soil and turns it over. There have been enormous changes, however, in the materials from which the plough is made, the method of propulsion, the number of furrows that can be ploughed at one time and the methods of control of the plough. John Deere's self-scouring steel plough was rightly lieralded as a major innovation and ploughing was one of the primary farming tasks to which early tractors were put. The plough has to be pulled across the entire surface of the field and numerous ways of achieving this have been tried. One notable method was the use of pairs of steam "ploughing engines" that were employed for field cultivation. They worked by drawing a plough backwards and forwards between them using a winch system rather than towing it behind a single machine. This method endured in many areas until the 1930s but, once the gasoline tractor was completely viable, plough development concentrated on using tractors for propulsion. Ferguson's three-point linkage made the attachment of implements, including ploughs, more straightforward. The three-point linkage has now been so refined that the depth of furrows can be automatically controlled. The advent of the reversible plough allowed a tractor driver to turn all the soil in the same direction despite driving the tractor in opposite ways, to and fro across the field. Preparation of the field requires more than ploughing and an array of other specialized implements has been devised to do this, including cultivators, harrows and stone clearers. A disc harrow is used to prepare a ploughed field for seeding while a cultivator can be used for a variety of tasks including stubble removal, mulching, aerating and turning in manure and fertilizer. Rollers can be used to make an even seed bed. Stone clearers remove stones that are turned up during ploughing and other operations; if left lying on the surface they can inhibit crop growth and damage machinery. Another group of specialized implements for attaching on to tractors includes those that are designed for the distribution of manure, slurry or chemical fertilizers. They range from the "muckspreader" to the broadcaster, which spreads seed via a spinning disc, and injectors which force material into the ground.
