      Truck, Trucks IVECO (INCLUDING IVECO FORD) In the early 1970's Fiat of Turin recognized the need to increase its share of the world truck market if it was to survive in the face of competition from the market leaders like Daimler-Benz and Volvo. While Fiat had a virtual monopoly of its home market, commanding nearly 80 per cent of truck sales, it needed to expand if it was to remain profitable. It had already absorbed most of the major Italian manufacturers over the years, including OM and Lancia, while it also owned Unic, giving it a foothold in the French market. Fiat found a partner in Germany's Magirus-Deutz, the truck manufacturing division of KHD (Klockner Humboldt Deutz) of Ulm. The old established company was also looking for a partnership that would ensure its future independence and strengthen its position in the market, but in Germany there were no suitable companies.

    After a worldwide survey, Magirus-Deutz and Fiat agreed to set up a joint company to co-operate on truck development and manufacture. The earliest meetings took place in 1973 and IVECO (Industrial Vehicle Corporation) came into being on January 1st 1975. Part of the agreement was that Magirus-Deutz would be allowed to continue building the air-cooled diesels for which it was renowned. Group production facilities were to be reviewed to make best use of factories by concentrating like with like, Turin was to build heavy trucks, Ulm medium trucks and heavy construction vehicles, including the air-cooled-engined bonneted trucks. Brescia's OM factory was to build medium-weight vehicles and Trappes in France medium to heavy. To satisfy all parties it was decided to locate Iveco's headquarters in a neutral country -The Netherlands. However, Iveco was still faced with problems integrating the various companies and factories into one corporate organization. While UNIC. along with the likes of OM and Lancia, had gracefully given up their individual identity and accepted their place under the Fiat dominated Keen umbrella, Magirus-Deutz were no pushover. They tought to retain their individuality, while pride in their 110-year-old company made them reluctant to be swallowed up by a foreign group. As a result, after five years of uneasy co-habitation with Fiat- KHD pulled out of Iveco. The Magirus name remained with Iveco but Deutx regained its independence as an engine manufacturer and continued to supply engines to Iveco. During these five years bold attempts had been made to give the Iveco Group products a corporate identity, but this had never gone beyond the addition of an italic "I" logo to their radiator grilles. From an early stage, however, heavy trucks from Fiat, OM, UNIC and Magirus-Deutz had all been given the Fiat tilt cab. Magirus was the only one to insist on including its famous "cathedral spire" trademark as well as the "I" logo. By the mid 1980s the Iveco brand name had replaced individual makes, and major restructuring was taking place to establish Iveco as a manufacturer in its own right. The truck that signified the true breakthrough for Iveco was the TurboStar of 1984. The important features of this highly successful truck were its cab and engine. While the cab bore a resemblance to its Fiat cousins, it was extensively redesigned with a 1.7m/5.5ft internal height and a sophisticated suspension system. There were two engines available the 8210 13.8 litre/842cu in straight six turbo with 330bhp, or the 8280 17.2 litre/1049cu in V8 with 420, making it one of the most powerful trucks of the era and eminently suitable for long-distance inter-continental haulage. The next major landmark in Iveco's development came in 1986 with the merger of Iveco and Ford's UK truck division. The result was Iveco Ford Trucks Ltd, with Iveco and Ford holding equal shares of 48 per cent each, the remaining 4 per cent being held by a merchant bank. Following the link-up, Ford badges were added to Iveco trucks for the UK market. Four years later came another milestone when Iveco added Pegaso (ENASA) to its ranks. This included Seddon Atkinson of Oldham, England which had become part of ENASA in 1983 when International Harvester sold off its European truck interests. Iveco made another important acquisition in 1992 in the form of International Trucks Australia Ltd. A major model-replacement program came to fruition between 1991 and 1993. An attractive new design of forward-control Steel/Plastic cab, the Multi Purpose or MP cab, was introduced in various widths and heights to cover all models from 6 to 44 tonnes gvw. At the lighter end came the 1991 Eurocargo (badged Cargo in the UK) with rigids from 6 to 15 tonnes gcw and tractors up to 34 tonnes gcw. Then came the Super Cargo 17-tonne, two-axled and 26-tonne three-axled rigids. Four-axled Eurotrakker rigids built at Iveco's Spanish plant appeared in 1993. A lighter-weight version, the Trakker, was also available and built at the Seddon Atkinson factory in the UK. The old TurboTech with Fiat-style cab was replaced by the new EuroTech in 1992, featuring the new MP cab. The TurboStar premium long-haul tractor was replaced in 1993 by the high-cabbed EuroStar UK operations had to wait until 1995 for right-hand drive versions. From outset it was evident that Iveco was the dominant partner in the Iveco merger and in 1996 it acquired 4 per cent neutral holding, making it the major shareholder with 52 per cent. One year later UK truck production was phased out and the Langley plant was closed. With its comprehensive model line-up Iveco is now well and truly established as a manufacturer in its own right.
