Guardian Warranty Corporation (GWC) Introduces Unmatched Mechanical Breakdown Coverage for Medium Duty Trucks
AVOCA, Pa., July 19 -- GWC, one of the largest nationwide providers of service contracts to independent and franchise dealerships, continues to create programs with the Dealer's success and profitability in mind. GWC recently announced the launch of its new Medium Duty Truck Protection Plan which gives Dealers who have a mix of vehicles on their lots an opportunity to fulfill every customer's needs. "Medium duty trucks represent a significant growth segment in the industry," according to Rob Glander, GWC's President and CEO. "We set out to provide a strong protection plan, backed by GWC's unparalleled service level, to help our Dealers meet the needs of this expanding customer base."
GWC's Medium Duty Truck Protection Plan provides mechanical breakdown coverage on trucks above and beyond what is typically offered in the market today. The exceptional coverage developed by GWC incorporates many more components than a basic powertrain protection plan and is available for trucks with a GVWR of up to 19,500 pounds. Straightforward and simple to understand, cost is determined by weight, mileage and fuel type, and is available on a wide range of mid-size vehicles from small dump trucks to refrigerated and box trucks. And as with all of GWC's Protection Plans, the coverage provided begins "Day One, Mile One."
Fleet Managers, Commercial Truck Managers and Independent Dealers who sell work vehicles to commercial businesses can now offer a truck protection plan that gives their customers peace of mind knowing their most critical business asset will be protected from costly, unexpected mechanical repairs. And in maintaining GWC's commitment to provide its Dealer partners with programs to maximize the profitability of their dealership, the Medium Duty Truck Protection Plan qualifies for the same participation program benefits offered with the company's Vehicle Protection Plans.
GWC understands today's Dealer needs. The Medium Duty Truck Protection Plan program is the latest offering by GWC that fulfills its promise of providing outstanding products designed to enhance the success of its Dealer Partners.

Ford's F-150 Team Wins Automotive Excellence Award at Ninth Annual Great Designs in Steel Seminar
Automaker honored for innovative use of advanced high-strength steels in its 2010 F-150 pickup truck
DETROIT, May 5 -- The Automotive Applications Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) honored Ford Motor Co.'s F-150 research and development team with its annual Automotive Excellence Award. The team was recognized for its cost-effective and efficient use of advanced and ultra high-strength steel, which helped to minimize the vehicle's weight impact, while maintaining its durability and safety.
The award was presented to Shawn Morgans, body structures technical leader, Ford, at the Ninth Annual Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, Mich. today.
The Automotive Excellence Award recognizes individuals or teams from automakers, suppliers or the academic community who embrace innovation and make significant contributions to the advancement of steel in the automotive marketplace.
"Providing strength and durability is clearly a primary objective when designing and building pickup trucks," Ron Krupitzer, vice president of automotive applications for SMDI, said. "Ford's innovative use of advanced and ultra high-strength steels allowed the company to increase the F-150's performance and safety, as well as to decrease its weight, helping to make it more fuel efficient."
The 2010 Ford F-150 uses increased amounts of advanced and ultra high-strength steels to save weight and improve performance and safety. Nearly 25 percent of the body-in-white is either advanced or ultra high-strength steel, which contributed to a mass-efficient design and a 75 percent increase in roof strength over the previous model.
Among the advanced high-strength steel features of the F-150 are a hydroformed front-end, low-pressure hydroformed dual-phase 780 roof rail, boron hot-stamped B-pillar reinforcement and high-strength side rails for increased durability and safety.
Award winners are chosen based on their presentation given at the previous year's Great Designs in Steel seminar. Candidates are rated in several categories, including: implementation in production; overall contribution to the advancement of steel; challenges and benefits associated with cost, mass reduction and performance; replacement of competitive materials; and structural performance and efficiency.

Truck: Commercial Truck Industry Opposes Legislation That Would Shift Authority to Se
Commercial Truck Industry Opposes Legislation That Would Shift Authority to Set Fuel Economy Rules
WASHINGTON, April 9 -- Important segments of the commercial truck industry -- dealers and drivers -- in a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood voiced their strong opposition today to a Senate bill that would nullify fuel economy rules established by Congress under the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007.
Legislation currently before the Senate (S. 1733, "Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act") would transfer the authority of the Department of Transportation (DOT) to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) when determining fuel economy rules for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
The American Truck Dealers, a division of the National Automobile Dealers Association, and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association are opposed to the Senate legislation because the EPA would be granted the authority to set fuel economy standards without considering the impact on the economy and other factors. Under current law, the DOT is required to take these considerations into account when issuing fuel economy rules.
"There are important reasons why the DOT should oppose a de facto repeal of the CAFE program for heavy-duty trucks in favor of an EPA regulation," the trade groups stated in the letter. "Under EISA, fuel economy standards must be economically practicable, meaning that the Secretary must consider such important factors as job loss, consumer choice ... and the health of the U.S. truck industry," the trade groups stated. "Congress mandated that the Secretary take these important considerations into account because it would not serve the nation's interests to set fuel economy standards that ignore these critical economic factors."
ATD Chairman Kyle Treadway, the dealer-owner of Kenworth Sales Company in Salt Lake City, Utah says there is no reason why the regulation of truck fuel economy should be transferred from the DOT to the EPA.
"DOT has been regulating fuel economy for more than three decades. EPA has been regulating fuel economy literally since last week," says Treadway, who operates 19 dealership locations in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Washington and Oregon. "It makes no sense to throw away all of DOT's expertise at a time when the trucking industry can least afford it. If the legislation passed, the result could be unaffordable fuel economy standards for truck buyers."

Truck: Timken Bolsters Resources to Support Growth in Heavy-Duty Truck Aftermarket
Timken Bolsters Resources to Support Growth in Heavy-Duty Truck Aftermarket
CANTON, Ohio, Jan. 20 -- When the road gets rough, sometimes it pays to keep on trucking. Timken did that during the recessionary year of 2009, and managed a modest sales increase in the North American heavy-duty truck aftermarket, despite the industry being down an estimated 20 percent.
"More and more, we're finding customers want to buy Timken products to ensure they get the most mileage for their money," said Phil Varner, Timken heavy-duty aftermarket manager. "We have proven quality advantages and a very popular training program that together have built a lot of trust in our brand."
Timken has focused on three things to drive growth in the aftermarket for heavy-duty trucks:
1. Leveraging Timken's quality advantage: The Timken® case-carburized tapered roller bearings produced in North America last seven times longer than competitors'(1); 2. Extending Timken's reach throughout the aftermarket via reps, dealers and distributors; and 3. Pull-focused marketing to get Timken specified by fleets and operators.
The company is adding several new positions in 2010 to support increased demand from these initiatives. Tom Tecklenburg, director - Timken automotive and heavy-duty aftermarket, announced the addition of two new regional managers and a national accounts manager, both reporting to Varner.
Among the new posts, Mark Stangl was appointed regional manager - heavy-duty aftermarket to focus on creating "pull" demand from key heavy-truck fleets working with sales representatives and independent rep agencies. Stangl joined Timken in June 1997 and has held various positions in engineering, sales and product management. His most recent role was specialist - fleet sales CTS. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and received his MBA from Kent State University in 2001.
Richard Moss was appointed to the position of national accounts manager - heavy-duty aftermarket, with responsibility for national program buying groups, key distributors and the interface with OE sales in developing and growing OE dealer sales. Moss joined Timken in October 1997 and has held various positions within aftermarket sales. His most recent role was marketing segment manager - heavy-duty. He has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
An additional regional manager position remains open.
"With everything we're doing to meet the demand for Timken's products in the heavy-duty aftermarket, from reps, to dealers, to training and more people on the street, we're effectively quadrupling our channel resources, and we are confident it's the right thing to do for our customers," said Tecklenburg.
